I have photographed my dear friend Audra's family more times than I can count, and it's awesome because she always has great ideas for locations and concepts.  This time, we were documenting baby P's first steps.  He was on the verge of walking for a while and when I finally got the call, I knew we had to act fast while those steps were still new and before he got to be too much of a pro at strolling around.  He was so happy to be mobile and so proud of how big he was!  And really, for a new walker, he was fast!

It seems like watching the weather on session days is my new normal, so of course it rained hard as I drove to the beach, but since Audra had gotten her makeup done, we were determined to make it happen!  I'm so glad we did because we started with a rainbow above us and the sky continued to clear up and our session ended with a gorgeous sunset.  As much as I love photography, there are some things still images just can't capture, like the faltering first steps of a one-year-old, and that's why I love video. I was super lucky to have my friend Meghan of Meghan Stewart Photography shoot the stills beside me so that I could focus on the movement. Enjoy! And if you're on a decent internet connection, click up to 720p so you can view it HD--it's worth it!

All We Ever Wanted (short version)
Before having kids, I never really thought about birth order, but there are definitely pros and cons of being the first born child.  I'm definitely stricter with my oldest, and for a long time she didn't have a playmate at home.  But I think this portrait session captures some of the advantages of being first!

As much as I love photography (and that's A LOT), there's something about video that brings out the emotions in me.  Maybe it's the connections and movements that still photos don't capture or maybe it's finding the perfect music to fit the mood of what I'm showing. Whatever it is, I was thrilled to shoot and produce my first commissioned moving family portrait. I've been creating videos of days in my own family's life, and A + P wanted to do something similar.

With the arrival of their new baby just around the corner, they wanted to document their life as a family of three.  Until I had my own kids, I never thought about the fact that I had been an only child (and had all my parents' attention!) for my first two-and-a-half years.  It seems like my little brother was always in our family.  So, maybe one day little P will watch this video and see what his life was like pre-baby-brother.

Last month, my family humored me one Saturday as I captured everything we did on video and in photos.  As much as I love the artistic beauty of still photography, there is something about video that just beings my emotions out.  Maybe it's the music, or maybe it's how you can see little movements and mannerisms that make a person unique, but I love video and I wanted to record what out little life looks like right now.  Here's us:

I had so much fun putting together photos and video clips from my recent family session.  My favorite part is seeing big sis rubbing her baby brother's head--such sweet interaction between siblings!  There's just something about photos set to music that makes me so emotional.  Can't wait to do another one!

This weekend, we celebrated our tenth anniversary with a day out on our own. It was such a treat to be able to watch a movie, and then taking our time going down to St. Augustine. We had an amazing dinner at the Tasting Room. The food was awesome, and we ate on one of the sofas, so it felt like we were in our own private area instead of a crowded restaurant. I'm so glad we were able to get some photos and video of the day to celebrate us! The most fun part was the photos we took on the lawn of the fort. They remind me of engagement portraits!

Lately I've been taking short videos and putting them alongside still shots to create a really fun finished product. There's just something about seeing photos set to good music that makes your connection to them even more emotional, don't you think? And video helps you see and remember details that might not be captured by still photography. A short video is a great way to share your photos with friends and family through social media, so I'm offering it as part of my portrait sessions. Check out this one that I made recently.
